7 DIY Backyard Activities Your Kids Will Love

I have been looking for some DIY backyard activities to make a fun, engaging and even educational space for our children to play. I have found these inexpensive activities that will make your backyard a place where you kids want to be.

Outdoor Science Lab

This science lab is made out of a large wooden spool and a large outdoor umbrella. This space can be used for science experiments, nature collections, crafting and more!

Outdoor Reading Nook or Hideaway

I love the idea of building an outdoor reading nook. Not only would it be useful year round but it could be used for other activities besides reading. I imagine my daughter playing house with her dolls, reading books, snuggling up with a hot or cold drink and having outdoor snack times with our neighbors. This hideaway will transform your yard into a play place that kids of all ages would love.

Sand and Water Table

This sand and water table is made out of PVC pipe, funnels of all sizes and a large storage bin. This is a great project to have ready come summertime. With materials like this, you don’t have to worry about breaking the bank and you’re guaranteed to have a playtime gadget that will entertain all season long!

Pallet Outdoor Play Kitchen

One mama made this pallet outdoor kitchen on a whim. She was inspired by her local thrift/ reStore. Why not give it a shot? Visit your local secondhand housewares store and see what kitchen tools you can find that your preschool and elementary age kids would enjoy playing with.

Hopscotch Garden Path

I have always been a fan of gardening and in recent years, I have loved pulling my kids into the mess of seeds and dirt and planting local starters. This hopscotch garden path is a perfect craft for an overcast day when gardening is not in the cards. Have your kids help you paint cement path stones and then add them to your garden area on the next sunny day. Your kids will be proud to see their work displayed every time they hop by.

Oversized Backyard Games

Here’s is a great collection of oversized backyard games. These are easy to make and with so many to choose from you can replicate games that are within your budget and appropriate for your children. As an added bonus, these games can be used for outdoor parties or when guests come over for a last minute supper.

DIY Mini Pond

This DIY pond may be the priciest option on my list and it also requires some upkeep but I couldn’t help myself. I love the idea of my kids taking care of fish of their own and talking about nature’s life cycles. If your kids are old enough, you could even have them keep an observation journal as an out of school summer activity.
